Start with water clarity and depth: use natural, translucent patterns in clear water and darker, high-contrast colors in stained or muddy water. Match the lure's running depth to where bass are holding, and pick a profile that mimics the dominant forage, whether that's shad, bluegill, or crawfish.
Low light periods like early morning and dusk are prime for topwater and moving baits, since bass feed more aggressively near the surface then. In bright midday sun or colder water, switch to slower presentations like jerkbaits or soft plastics fished deeper where bass are holding tight to cover.
Topwater lures shine in calm to slightly rippled water, overcast skies, and warmer water temperatures when bass are actively chasing prey near the surface. On windy days, in cold fronts, or when bass are sluggish, subsurface baits like crankbaits or jigs that stay in the strike zone longer tend to produce better.
