Size and profile matter too, so downsize in cold water or heavy pressure and go bigger when bass are actively feeding on shad or bluegill. Keep a few worms, creature baits, and swimbaits on hand since bass respond differently depending on season and structure.

Soft plastics work year-round but really shine when bass are less aggressive, like post-frontal conditions, high pressure days, or cold water in winter and early spring when a slow presentation gets more bites than reaction baits. They are also deadly in summer around docks, grass lines, and deep structure when fish are holding tight and need a bait worked slowly through cover. Basically, any time reaction baits get ignored, a soft plastic rigged right will usually still get bit.

Texas rigging keeps the bait weedless and compact, making it ideal for fishing dense cover like grass mats, laydowns, and brush piles where you need to punch through without snagging. Carolina rigging separates the weight from the bait with a leader, letting the plastic float more naturally off bottom, which works well for covering deeper, more open structure like points, ledges, and humps. Both catch fish, so the choice comes down to the type of cover and depth you're targeting.
