Match the bait's diving depth to the depth of cover or structure you're targeting, since a crankbait needs to bump bottom or tick through cover to trigger strikes. Square bills run shallow (2-6 feet) and deflect off wood and rock, medium divers (6-12 feet) cover points and ledges, and deep divers (12-20+ feet) are built for offshore humps and river channel edges. Water clarity matters too: go with natural shad or perch patterns in clear water and brighter chartreuse or firetiger in stained or muddy conditions.

Crankbaits shine in cooler water during pre-spawn (early spring) and fall turnover, when bass are feeding aggressively on baitfish and moving through open water. They also work well in summer around deep structure once bass push offshore, especially with slow-rolled deep divers. Cold, muddy post-front conditions are usually the only time crankbaits struggle since bass get lockjawed and reaction bites drop off.

Lipless crankbaits have no bill, sink on pause, and produce a tight vibrating action that works great for burning over grass flats or yo-yoing through submerged vegetation. Squarebills have a wide, stubby lip that makes them deflect erratically off cover like laydowns, riprap, and stumps without constantly snagging. Both are reaction baits, but squarebills are better around hard cover and lipless baits excel in and around grass.
