Tackle & Gear Glossary
This section covers the hardware and terminology behind rods, reels, line, hooks, and terminal tackle that make up a bass angler's system. Understanding these terms helps you match the right gear to the right technique instead of guessing at what the tackle wall is telling you.
- Baitcaster. A reel that sits on top of the rod for accuracy and power.
- Braided Line. A thin, strong line with almost no stretch.
- EWG Hook. An extra-wide-gap hook for bulky soft plastics.
- Fluorocarbon. A near-invisible line that sinks, good for clear water.
- Gear Ratio. How much line a reel picks up per handle turn.
- Leader. A length of line tied between your main line and the lure.
- Monofilament. A stretchy, floating, budget-friendly line.
- Spinning Reel. A reel that hangs under the rod, easy for beginners.
- Treble Hook. A three-point hook used on hard baits like crankbaits.
