They're not going to out-fish a hand-poured custom bait every time, but for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and soft plastics they're dialed in enough to fool pressured bass. Most anglers use them as workhorse baits for docks, laydowns, and rocky banks where losing tackle is a real possibility.

Match the lure to water clarity and depth first: crankbaits and spinnerbaits for stained water and open flats, jigs and Texas-rigged worms for heavy cover, and topwater walkers for calm, low-light conditions. In clear water go with more natural shad and craw patterns, and in murky water switch to chartreuse, black-blue, or anything with extra vibration. If you're not sure where to start, a square-bill crank and a soft plastic worm cover the widest range of situations.

Spinnerbaits shine in the spring and fall when bass are shallow and aggressive, especially in wind-blown coves or off points with some current. Crankbaits produce year-round but really earn their keep in summer and early fall when bass are relating to cover 3 to 12 feet deep. Overcast, slightly wind-rippled days are prime time for both, since the reduced light and surface chop make bass less line-shy and more willing to chase.
