For most bass fishing, 3.5 to 4.5 inch swimbaits cover the widest range of situations and match the size of shad and bluegill bass key on most of the year. Bump up to 5 to 6.5 inch models when targeting bigger fish in deeper reservoirs or when bass are keyed on larger baitfish like gizzard shad. Keep a few smaller 2.5 to 3 inch sizes on hand for pressured clear water or finesse presentations on spinning gear.

Paddle tails shine from post-spawn through fall when bass are actively chasing baitfish in open water, and they excel any time shad are schooling on flats, points, or over submerged grass. They also work well in spring as water warms and bass move shallow to feed heavily before and after spawning. Low light periods at dawn and dusk tend to produce the most reaction strikes on a straight retrieve.

Paddle tails perform best in stained to clear water where bass can visually track the thumping tail action and flash of the paddle. In muddy water, switch to darker colors or add a rattle so bass can locate the bait by vibration rather than sight. Wind and slight chop actually help these baits by adding extra baitfish-like disturbance in the water column.
