Topwater lures shine in calm to slightly rippled water, overcast skies, and warmer water temperatures when bass are actively chasing prey near the surface. On windy days, in cold fronts, or when bass are sluggish, subsurface baits like crankbaits or jigs that stay in the strike zone longer tend to produce better.
