Braid, fluorocarbon, and mono in the strengths that match your technique, from finesse spinning to heavy flipping.
It depends on the technique. Fluorocarbon suits cranking and moving baits in clear water because it sinks and has low visibility, braid handles heavy cover and topwater frogging thanks to its strength and lack of stretch, and monofilament floats well for topwater plugs and reaction baits. Most serious bass anglers keep all three spooled up for different situations.
Tie on a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader when you're fishing clear water or dealing with line-shy bass, since straight braid is highly visible underwater. A 2 to 4 foot leader connected with an FG knot or Alberto knot gives you braid's strength and sensitivity with a nearly invisible connection near the bait.
For general bass fishing, 10 to 17 lb fluorocarbon or mono and 20 to 40 lb braid handle most situations you'll run into. Bump up to 50 to 65 lb braid or 20 lb-plus fluorocarbon for grass mats and flipping heavy timber, and drop to 6 to 8 lb line for finesse presentations in clear, open water.
